Clearly, I have a very old fashioned way of thinking, I had never once considered addiction a "real" disease.Author, David Sheff, does a marvelous job of outlining addiction (why we use, the disease, drugs and alcohol in our culture, etc.), and ways to get addicts clean (he describes dozens of different treatments, not everyone can get clean the same way) and stay clean. In my head, addicts were selfish people who didn't know when enough was enough and tore their family and friends lives to pieces in their selfish downward spiral. Basically after reading this, I realized I know nothing on this subject. Addiction is more prevalent then ever.Prior to this book, I knew the concept behind addiction and thought I had it all figured out. It's something that I never would have guessed would affect me or anyone I care about, but who am I kidding, this is the 21st century. I'm not going to go into details in this book review but those of you who know me, know why I find this subject hard. This was definitely one of the hardest books I've read this year, not because it was badly written but because the subject matter was very personal and not at all comforting like I hoped it would be. Romance heroes in these books are especially possessive, domineering, and aces at hiding their true emotions. What’s a mafia romance book without an alpha male at its helm? Whether the hero of the story is the head boss, son of the crime leader, or an enforcer for a family, given his life choices you better believe he’s going to be one strong alpha male. So if one or all of these themes get your motor running, you’ll undoubtedly become a fan of mafia romance novels. Not all of these themes will be included in every mafia romance book, but there’s a good chance several will be. While all mafia romance books deal with some aspect of organized crime, there are several other common themes that readers will find within a mafia romance novel. Think The Sopranos only with a love story and happily-ever-after. Typically these books revolve around a hero or family involved with organized crime. Mafia romance books include any romance stories featuring Made Men, mafia families, or anyone tied to the mafia world. Check out this book list of the best mafia romance books worth reading. While each essay offers information to help us better understand these issues, together they add up a damning takedown of White feminism. The essays cover topics like food insecurity, how Black women are stereotyped and represented in the media, access to quality medical care, gun violence, and reproductive justice. Its subtitle is “Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot,” which sets up this collection of 18 essays perfectly. Frankly, you can stop reading this review and skip to the buy link, because the TL DR of this review is that I cannot recommend Hood Feminism enough. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I probably highlighted a solid 25-30% of this book. I realized at one point that I was highlighting so much it was getting absurd. Because I’ve been following her for so long, I don’t know that any of the concepts in it were entirely new for me, but I learned a lot because of the time and attention given to each one. So I was more than a little excited when Hood Feminism dropped earlier this year. I’ve been following Mikki Kendall for years on Twitter and appreciated all the knowledge she’s shared for free on that hellscape of a platform. And watching two guys just lusting after each other and getting off on watching their partner cut guys up with saws just. The attraction between them still seems to largely hinge on physical elements and a mutual love of fucking people up. Second, I'm not really sure how the romance between these characters has progressed or that they've really developed as people. And there wasn't much of a plot except for the torture stuff and Daniel and Stavros each taking a turn rescuing the other from. I said in my review of CTC that the first half of the book was torture porn and the second half was an enemies to lovers romance. It pushed the limits of what I'm comfortable with personally, and I think anyone who doesn't enjoy reading about gore and torture should avoid this book. Sequels that follow a couple actually getting together are always hard, and I was interested to see how Ashton kept things fresh between Daniel and Stavros in this new book.įirst, the violence in this book seems to have been upped by a lot. This was my first buddy read with the amazing Julia, so make sure you check out her review! I was super psyched to read DIG YOUR GRAVE because the first book in the series, CALL THE CORONER, ended up being an unexpected fave despite the violence and dysfunctional romance. He must learn how to channel the volatile improvisation required of his instrument while accepting the input of his partners and empowering them to reach their ideal performance level. Lead guitarist Uenoyama, for example, is a hot headed prodigy who has been rejected by previous bands for creative differences. It is a great touch for the instruments of the characters to serve as a reflection of their inner struggles and/or role in the narrative. This methodical progression helps the episodes flow smoothly, as it rarely feels as though there is a dominant character focus for any particular episode. Each of the band mates are given practical goals, motivations and fleshed out backstories that are sprinkled into the narrative as the episodes progress rather than forcefully crammed It is fairly unconventional for a single cour romance to have convincing characterization.yet Given makes this a strong point. This is a vanilla, realistic, down to earth romance that can be watched by anyone open minded to love that exceeds conventional desire. Given strikes the rare balance of being openly gay - none of that maybe he is, maybe he isn’t crap - while not indulging in over the top eroticism to pander to a niche viewership. Indeed, Sowell's writing style (the first book of his I've ever read) is crisp, clear, engaging, and always thought provoking. This book is a hard one to put down, and despite its scholarly merits, does not lull the reader into unconsciousness. He explains the role of the "middleman minority" and how their rational economic behavior often translates into class and ethnic stereotyping and hatred. Sowell provides one of the must elucidating explanations of the seemingly maniacal worldwide hatred of Jews that I have ever heard. But the best surprise is that this book goes far beyond what the title appears to imply. Sowell provides the reader/listener with an exceedingly well-sourced (but not at all dry) account of the origins of so-called "African American culture". Thomas Sowell's scholarly expertise does not fail to disappoint in this enlightening book. His style and his interpretation of fashion trends are unique for the time: no exotic locations, nor special props, but pure simplicity. Assistant, for two years, to the Düsseldorf-based photographer, Hans Lux, in 1978 he goes to Paris and starts working for Italian Vogue, then the English, French, German, and American editions.
